There are four possibilties to finish latch hooked rugs: Whipping, buttonholing and crochet with yarn , or binding the edges with a cotton binding tape.
First whipped edges: To whip round the canvas use a thick yarn and suitable tapestry needle, starting in the centre of one side. To do this, put the needle from the reverse of the canvas to the front. Bring up the end and lay it across about four sqares. Work over this. Move one hole to the left and bring the yarn back to the original hole. Then move three holes to the left and bring the thread up. Then back two and bring the thread up, working over the stitches in the corners.
buttonholing: use buttonhole stitch with thick yarn
Crochet stitches also work well for these edgings, working over two squares with big loose loops.
Cotton binding tape: If you want to wash your rug, pre-wash the binding in very hot water, and iron it while slightly damp. Then you can sew it on the rug by folding the edges to the back and sewing the hem approx. under the middle of the tape.
