I found a rug made of wool sweaters in a book. The author recommends to wash the sweater in the washing maschine at 40 degrees Celsius that is about 104 degrees F. She cuts in rounds in about 3 cm wide strips. (1.2 inch). I have not made a rug with woolen sweaters but the rug in the book looks good. And the strips does not look unraveled.
I hope this helps.
