"Skunk Cabbage"
Hooked and Designed by Vervian Stephenson

Although I have been hooking for about fifteen years now, this was only my second project. When I moved to San Juan Island, Washington, I met Pat Horn who got me "hooked" on the craft. I hooked with a group from Friday Harbor. As I moved there from Southeast Alaska, skunk cabbage held a very special meaning for me--it meant the long winter was going to end. So, I wanted to hook a skunk cabbage. With Pat's help, I dyed the wool for the flowers and leaves, and the rest of the wool was from old clothes. I did this project before attending classes and learning such things as "always plan your background first" and "never use yellow as your main color." I had blue and green halibut jackets (Woolrich) that I used for the background, and the size and the shape of the project was determined by how much material I had. Even though I have done a number of other projects I like very much, this still remains a favorite.
