Village Of Pemberville

Hooked by Cindi Gay
Submitted February 2003

"Village of Pemberville" was designed in a class with Pris Buttler.  I should have known from the beginning that this was not going to be a simple hook.  When I decided to get organized and color plan the rug (after hooking about a month), I realized that the placement of the buildings was all wrong.  Luckily, rug warp has two sides.  I frog-stitched (rip-it, rip-it, rip-it) the hooking I had completed, turned the backing over and redrew the design.

The large pine tree took three months to get right.  I was asked to teach a workshop on pine trees as a result of this hard work.  I wrote a workshop booklet, Pictorial Basics: Pine Trees, Grass and Sky, to keep me on track.  I was pleased when the students could duplicate the method.  I learned on this piece not to be afraid of shadows.  Previously I hooked shadows, but not with as much contrast.  The shadows are what bring this rug to life.  For rug hooking instructions and a full rug gallery visit me at www.cindigay.com
