JENNINGS DANIEL
I never got to see my grandmother hooking rugs, as she died when I was 2, but I grew up with
the many she finished, and knew that a rug could be created by yourself and specifically suited to your own tastes. So, a year ago when I coveted a reproduction William Morris carpet I saw in a catalog, I decided to make it for myself.
I bumbled around until I discovered that the Hares to Ewe studio in Santa Ana holds classes several times a month. Gail Bachman's enthusiasm for the craft got me through my first hooked project, which became a pillow, and got me hooked. Then I was ready to create the rug of my dreams.
Jane Olson guided me through the design process and helped choose colors. The original carpet's pattern changed all the way across, but we chose to simplify it by repeating one corner all around. Also, the original colors were somewhat muted, whereas I wanted more jewel-like tones.
The center background is a deep turquoise, and the border is red with blue-shaded leaf things. The only other colors used were ecru, tan, and green, for the leaves, vines, and flower shapes, and spots of the same red used for the border. I hooked like a madwoman from April to July--I just had to see it finished as soon as possible. Now my 20" x30" masterpiece is proudly displayed on my bedroom floor, where only my favorite people are allowed to step on it!
