Rosie In The Airing Cupboard
Hooked by Louise Creed
Submitted March 2002

This was the first rag rug I made to my own design, and, by a series of chances, a photograph of it was published in Emma Tennant's book Rag Rugs of England and America (Walker Books,1992) and later in Juliet Bawden's Rag Rug Inspirations (Cassell, 1996) among various others of my cats.

In this way, Rosie, our cherished cat, rose to fame, and I still think of her when I visit the airing cupboard with an armful of linen! She has hung in many galleries all over England and Wales, and photographs of her (available as cards) are, I am told, framed and displayed in countless homes.

The craftsmanship of this rug is appalling, as it was made so near the beginning of my self-taught rug-making, but this seems to have no effect on its appeal to cat-lovers.Rosie and her brothers, sisters, cousins, second cousins, and great uncle Gregory have been the subjects of many subsequent rag rugs.
